Privacy Policy

Effective date: September 15, 2026

TroutTips ("TroutTips," "we," "us," or "our") operates trouttips.com and the TroutTips iOS app (together, the "Service"). This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. This policy provides information about our practices; it does not replace consent where consent is required.

1. Information we collect

Account information

If you create a free account, we collect the email address and password you provide. Your password is never stored in plain text. It is hashed before it's saved, so we can't see or recover the original password ourselves.

Location data

The Fly Shop Locator can ask your browser or device for your current location so it can sort nearby fly shops by distance. This only happens if you actively choose to share your location, and you can decline or later revoke that permission in your browser or device settings at any time without losing access to the rest of the Service. We use this location in the moment to sort results. We do not store a history of your locations.

Favorites, alerts, and saved items

If you save a river, rig, fly, rod, or fly shop, or set up a river-condition alert, we store that information (tied to your account) so we can show it back to you and, for alerts, notify you by email and/or push notification when conditions change.

Billing information

If you subscribe to TroutTips Pro, your payment is processed by Stripe, our payment processor. We do not receive or store your full card number. Stripe handles that directly and shares with us only what's needed to manage your subscription (for example, your plan, subscription status, and renewal date).

Usage and analytics data

We use Google Analytics to understand how the Service is used, for example which pages are viewed, session length, and general traffic sources. This includes standard technical information such as your approximate location (city/region level, derived from IP address), device and browser type, and pages visited. We also track a small set of specific actions (like opening the sign-up prompt, completing sign-up, or logging in) so we can understand whether the free-account experience is working, not to build an individual profile of you beyond what's described here.

Advertising and conversion measurement

We use Google Ads conversion tracking on our website to measure whether our advertising leads to completed free-account signups or completed TroutTips Pro checkouts, including free-trial checkouts where no payment is collected that day. Google tags may collect page URLs, ad-click identifiers, cookie or similar identifiers, IP addresses, and device and browser information to connect website activity with advertising interactions and measure campaign performance.

For a completed Pro checkout, we also send Google the selected monthly or annual plan price, USD currency, and a checkout-session transaction ID used to help prevent duplicate counting. During a free trial, this reported value represents the selected plan price, not money collected that day. These conversion events do not include your password or full payment-card details.

Learn how Google processes information from sites and apps that use its services at Google's Business Data Responsibility page, and read about Google's advertising technologies and controls.

Push notification data

If you install the TroutTips iOS app and enable notifications, we use OneSignal, our push notification provider, to deliver river-condition alerts. OneSignal assigns your device a subscription identifier and, if you're signed in, we associate that identifier with your account email so alerts reach the right device. We do not use push notifications for advertising.

2. How we use your information

  • To create and maintain your account, and to let you sign in securely.
  • To provide the features you use: favorites, saved rigs/flies, river alerts, and Fly Shop Locator distance sorting.
  • To send river-condition alert emails and push notifications you've opted into, and account-related emails (like sign-up confirmation or billing receipts).
  • To process TroutTips Pro subscriptions and manage billing through Stripe.
  • To understand usage patterns and improve the Service: what's working, what isn't, and what to build next.
  • To measure the effectiveness of TroutTips advertising, attribute completed signups and Pro checkouts to advertising interactions, and improve our campaigns.
  • To maintain the security and integrity of the Service, including detecting and preventing abuse.

We do not sell your personal information for money or display third-party ads on TroutTips. We do share measurement information with Google for the advertising purposes described above.

3. Who we share information with

We use the following providers to operate TroutTips and measure our advertising. The information shared depends on the service and is summarized below:

ProviderWhat it's used forWhat's shared

VercelHosting the website and backendStandard web request data (e.g. IP address) needed to serve pages

We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of TroutTips, our users, or others. If TroutTips is ever involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We'll provide notice before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

4. Cookies and similar technology

We use a small number of cookies and comparable local storage:

  • Session cookie: a secure, HTTP-only cookie that keeps you signed in. It's required for account features to work and isn't used for advertising.
  • Theme preference: a local storage entry that remembers whether you prefer light or dark mode.
  • Analytics cookies: set by Google Analytics to distinguish sessions and visits.
  • Advertising measurement cookies and identifiers: Google Ads may set or read cookies and use ad-click identifiers to link advertising interactions with website activity and completed conversions.

You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings, though the session cookie is required to stay signed in.

5. Data retention

We keep your account information for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account (available any time from the account menu), we immediately delete your favorites, alerts, saved items, and subscription record from our database, and delete the account itself. You can read the exact steps in "Your choices and rights" below. Some information may remain in analytics or backup systems for a limited period after deletion, and billing records may be retained by Stripe as required for tax and accounting purposes.

6. Your choices and rights

Delete your account

You can permanently delete your account at any time from the account menu (Delete account). This cancels any active subscription, and removes your favorites, alerts, saved flies, subscription record, and account record.

Manage your subscription

You can manage or cancel your TroutTips Pro subscription at any time from the account menu (Manage billing), which takes you to Stripe's billing portal.

Location and notifications

You can decline or revoke location access and push notification permissions at any time in your browser or device settings. This won't affect your ability to use the rest of the Service.

Email preferences

River-alert emails and account emails are tied to features you've opted into (like setting up an alert); removing an alert or deleting your account stops those emails.

Advertising and browser controls

You can manage or delete cookies through your browser settings. Blocking cookies may limit measurement and can affect features such as staying signed in. Google's advertising technologies and controls page explains the choices Google offers. Advertising personalization settings and cookie controls are different; changing personalization settings does not necessarily stop conversion measurement. Contact us at hello@trouttips.com with questions or applicable privacy-rights requests about advertising measurement.

Requesting a copy or deletion of your data

If you'd like a copy of the personal information we hold about you, or want us to delete it outside of the in-app account-deletion flow, contact us using the details below and we'll respond within a reasonable time. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws like the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) or the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including the right to access, correct, or delete your information, and we'll honor applicable requests consistent with those laws.

7. Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including hashed passwords, encrypted connections (HTTPS), and secure, HTTP-only session cookies. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security.

8. Children's privacy

TroutTips is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll update the effective date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice (such as an in-app notice or email).

Sign in to TroutTips

Browsing TroutTips is always free. An account lets you save favorites and set river alerts.

Go Pro

Save favorites, set river alerts, and sync across every device.

Billing starts seven days after we send your first prime-flow email during the trial, or 30 days after your trial starts, whichever comes first. Only an email reporting a watched river in its optimal flow range counts. Prime-flow emails are suppressed during a known closure or temperature warning. Adverse-condition, temperature, closure and reopening notices, summaries and push notifications do not count. Cancel before that date to avoid a charge. Trial terms.
