What's swimming in the Crystal River
- A CPW fish-count survey led by biologist Kendall Bakich found Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and Mountain Whitefish (more abundant here than on the nearby Roaring Fork), along with sculpins and speckled dace (Pitkin Outside).
- CPW stocked roughly 280,000 Rainbow Trout fingerlings plus 5,000 catchable Rainbows in 2021, using a whirling-disease-resistant strain (Pitkin Outside).
- The Crystal is not Gold Medal water -- it does not appear on Trout Unlimited's Gold Medal Waters list or in CPW's 2024 fishing brochure (Trout Unlimited Gold Medal Waters; CPW 2024 fishing brochure).
- CPW lifted a voluntary low-flow fishing closure on the Crystal in October 2025 (CPW news, Oct 16, 2025).

How we pick these
Species are CPW's records from its Fishing Atlas. A creek missing from this list may still hold fish; CPW simply has no record for it. The list runs in the order each one joins the Crystal River, from the headwaters down, and "joins" names the nearest town to where it does on the same side of the mountains: a Census place, or a town with its own post office. Flow is how USGS maps each channel, not a live reading.
Special rules are the ones CPW writes for each creek in its Fishing Atlas. Rules CPW writes for the river itself, such as closures around a creek's mouth, are not repeated on the creek, and no directions lead into water CPW closes all year.
A national forest stretch is one that both the Forest Service's and BLM's ownership maps show as national forest for at least half a mile of the creek, with a road on the Forest Service's motor vehicle map within 500 feet; directions go to that road. Maps can be wrong and road seasons change. Away from CPW access points, check land ownership before you fish.
Getting to the Crystal River
CPW has no special regulation listed for the Crystal, so statewide rules apply by default rather than by an explicit CPW statement about the Redstone reach.
- Redstone Campground, USFS, White River National Forest -- 37 sites on the Crystal River, some with electrical hookups; $38–45/night (USFS).
- Bogan Flats Campground, USFS -- creek-adjacent sites, restrooms, potable water; $34/night (USFS).
- Filoha Meadows Nature Preserve, Pitkin County -- Crystal River frontage reached on foot/bike between the Redstone Bridge and Filoha; the property east of the river is closed Oct. 1–June 30, no dogs (Pitkin County).
- No special regulation is listed -- statewide limits apply: 4 trout daily, 8 in possession (CPW statewide limits). Effective July 17, 2026, CPW put a full-day voluntary fishing closure on the Crystal from mile marker 64 on Hwy 133 downstream to the Roaring Fork confluence (CPW news) -- worth checking current conditions given this river's history of drought-driven closures.
