What's swimming in the Arkansas River
- Pueblo tailwater: Rainbow Trout are regularly stocked below the dam, alongside other trout; this is a different fishery from the brown-dominated upper river. Local reporting describes the stocked tailwater opportunity, not a guaranteed species catch (Pueblo Star Journal).
- Brown Trout make up more than 80% of the trout community, averaging 12 inches with fish to 16 inches and occasional 20-inchers, and CPW calls it "predominantly a wild brown trout fishery" (CPW Upper Arkansas fishery survey).
- Rainbow Trout average 14 inches; a whirling-disease-resistant strain has been stocked since 2009, and the Gunnison River Rainbow strain since 2017 (CPW Upper Arkansas fishery survey).
- The reach supports up to 5,000 trout per mile, and CPW's Fishing Atlas flags the Chaffee County Arkansas as a wild, not-stocked fishery (CPW survey; CPW Fishing Atlas).
- The Nathrop stretch sits inside the Gold Medal reach designated January 2014 from Lake Fork Creek to Parkdale, 102 miles total (CPW survey).

How we pick these
Species are CPW's records from its Fishing Atlas. A creek missing from this list may still hold fish; CPW simply has no record for it. The list runs in the order each one joins the Arkansas River, from the headwaters down, and "joins" names the nearest town to where it does on the same side of the mountains: a Census place, or a town with its own post office. Flow is how USGS maps each channel, not a live reading.
Special rules are the ones CPW writes for each creek in its Fishing Atlas. Rules CPW writes for the river itself, such as closures around a creek's mouth, are not repeated on the creek, and no directions lead into water CPW closes all year.
A national forest or grassland stretch is one that both the Forest Service's and BLM's ownership maps show as Forest Service land for at least half a mile of the creek, with a road on the Forest Service's motor vehicle map within 500 feet; directions go to that road. Where a line names a trail, the Forest Service trail comes within 500 feet of the creek instead, and directions go to its trailhead; from where the trail enters the forest, the whole way is national forest in both maps. A BLM or state park stretch is one that both BLM's land map and the USGS Protected Areas Database (which must record it as open access) show as that land for at least half a mile of the creek, with a public road within 500 feet; state parks charge an entry fee. Maps can be wrong and road seasons change. Away from CPW access points, check land ownership before you fish.
Getting to the Arkansas River
The Nathrop freestone and Pueblo tailwater are different destinations. Match the access point, gauge and regulations to the reach you intend to fish.
- Pueblo tailwater: Lake Pueblo State Park provides a river corridor for fly fishing below the reservoir. Use designated park access and parking; do not confuse the river with Valco or Anticline ponds (CPW Lake Pueblo).
- Fisherman's Bridge, Ruby Mountain and Hecla Junction are part of the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA), managed by CPW -- part of nine access sites between Buena Vista and Salida, including Browns Canyon National Monument (CPW AHRA Buena Vista).
- Bighorn Springs SWA (Fishing Easement), near Nathrop, is a 122-acre easement with three fishing access sites; open sunrise to half an hour after sunset, fishing only, parking in designated areas only, dogs prohibited (CPW Bighorn Springs SWA).
- Johnson Village SWA and Champion SWA (Fishing Easements) cover Chaffee County; Champion SWA restricts access to fishing only, designated parking areas only (CPW Champion SWA).
- CPW counts over 80 miles of public walk/wade access on this reach (CPW Upper Arkansas fishery survey).
- Pueblo, Valco Ponds bridge downstream to Pueblo Boulevard: artificial flies and lures only, with a posted exception at Pueblo Nature Center and a special trout size-release rule. Check the current official wording and signs before keeping fish; this is not the upper Arkansas Gold Medal reach (CPW special regulations).
