Blue River (Below Dillon Reservoir)

Summit Daily quotes a Cutthroat Anglers guide describing browns in the Silverthorne town reach and reports Brown Trout in strong supply alongside rainbows and cutbows. This is evidence for the below-Dillon fishery, not a borrowed above-reservoir survey. Summit Daily: Silverthorne local-guide account.
This is a dated local-guide account, not a current population census or a claim that browns dominate every pool. Cutbows are hybrids and are not counted as pure Cutthroat Trout.
- Access
- Start at River’s Edge Park, west of Blue River Parkway just north of I-70. The town identifies fishing access along the Blue River and the Blue River Trail here. Use posted legal parking serving the park and trail; do not assume neighboring retail lots permit unlimited angler parking. Stay within public frontage. Town of Silverthorne: River’s Edge Park.
- Season
- Local sources describe year-round tailwater fishing, not guaranteed access or safe wading every day. Winter ice along banks, releases and current notices still matter. Do not target spawning trout or walk on redds. Seasonal evidence.
- Rules
- Dillon Dam to the north city limits of Silverthorne: artificial flies and lures only; release all trout immediately. The separate September 15–December 1 closure above Dillon Reservoir does not close this tailwater. Check current CPW rules and posted boundaries. Official rules.

Fryingpan River (Below Ruedi Reservoir)
Frying Pan River SWA · Eagle County · Official brown-focused fishery
CPW's below-Ruedi survey describes Brown Trout as extremely abundant and most often caught by anglers. Its 2019 samples found browns throughout the surveyed tailwater. A May 2024 CPW management notice again describes excessive Brown Trout abundance. CPW: Fryingpan fishery survey (2019 data).
Historical surveys and management findings establish a strong brown-focused fishery, not today's density, guaranteed size or catch odds. High density can mean many smaller trout.
- Access
- Use the designated Frying Pan River SWA fishing-lease parking near mile marker 6 on Frying Pan River Road east of Basalt, as described in CPW's recreation-lands brochure. Fish only the signed leased frontage. Current CPW rules limit access to fishing, prohibit dogs and require visitors 16+ to hold a valid license or SWA pass; a pass alone does not authorize fishing. - Season
- Use current water and access conditions to choose the date. The CPW survey describes fall spawning in late October–November; that is a reason to avoid disturbing spawning fish, not a recommendation to target redds. No precise best-month ranking is established for this access. Seasonal evidence.
- Rules
- Ruedi Dam to the Roaring Fork confluence: artificial flies and lures only; release all trout except Brown Trout immediately. Check current CPW harvest rules before retaining a brown. The old survey's two-fish/14-inch special limit is not repeated as current law. SWA access is fishing-only, in posted areas, with no dogs. Official rules.

Arkansas River (Hecla Junction)

BLM identifies Browns Canyon's Arkansas River as an excellent opportunity to catch Brown and Rainbow Trout. This is a supported brown-trout outing with an established public access site. BLM: Browns Canyon.
Not a brown-only fishery or a current population survey. The evidence does not establish a catch probability for a particular bank or pool.
- Access
- Start at Hecla Junction Recreation Site and use designated parking. A CPW park pass is required. The approach is steep and unpaved; BLM recommends high clearance and 4WD. Stay inside signed public access and do not block the boat ramp. BLM: access and parking.
- Season
- Spring before runoff and summer/fall after runoff are useful planning windows. High flows can rule out wading. BLM lists a December 1–April 15 seasonal gate closure without identifying the gate; confirm your specific approach before a winter trip. Seasonal evidence.
- Rules
- Gold Medal designation is not itself a tackle rule. Check the current Arkansas River regulations and posted public boundaries. Avoid spawning fish and their beds. Official rules.

Gunnison River (Van Tuyl public reach)

CPW’s January 2026 summary describes excellent Brown and Rainbow Trout fishing from Almont to Blue Mesa and specifically identifies Van Tuyl’s public river access. Official fishery evidence.

- Access
- Begin at Char-Mar Park using legal public parking, then follow the approximately half-mile trail to the Van Tuyl Y-gate. CPW requires foot access from the posted Y-gate trail intersection. Stay inside the signed 1.5-mile public reach. Public access reference.
- Season
- No precise species-specific monthly peak is established for this access. Check current flows, temperature, weather, closures and access before leaving. Seasonal evidence.
- Rules
- Almont to Highway 50: artificial flies and lures only, release rainbows, and check current Brown Trout limits. Taking kokanee is prohibited August 1–October 31. SWA access is foot-only from the Y-gate; dogs must be leashed. Official rules.

Choosing the time of year
The catalog separates year-round tailwater guidance from the timing evidence for other river outings. Seasonal access, releases, runoff and heat can still change the plan, and spawning fish and their beds should be left undisturbed.
The outing references above explain the timing. A researched window is not a legal opening date, a forecast or a promise of safe access.
