Blue River (Below Dillon Reservoir)
River’s Edge Park, Silverthorne · Summit County · Guide-supported rainbow target
The local-guide account specifically discusses fishing below Dillon Dam and through Silverthorne, identifies numerous rainbows behind the shop and describes rainbows as the most commonly caught trout on the Blue. The account is from 2021, not a live catch report or current density estimate. Large fish and good catch rates are not guaranteed. This is the same physical outing as the Brown Trout entry.
- Access
- Use River’s Edge Park, west of Blue River Parkway just north of I-70, and the Blue River Trail. The town explicitly provides river fishing access. - Season
- Year-round tailwater option according to local guides. Cold releases, ice at the edges and fishing pressure affect the outing. Respect current notices and leave spawning fish and redds undisturbed. Seasonal evidence.
- Rules
- Dillon Dam to north Silverthorne city limits: artificial flies and lures only; release all trout immediately. The upstream reservoir-inlet closure is a different reach. Check current CPW regulations and signs. Official rules.

Fryingpan River (Below Ruedi Reservoir)
Frying Pan River SWA · Eagle County · Survey-supported mixed fishery
CPW's 2019 Fryingpan survey records Rainbow Trout in all four sampled below-Ruedi reaches and describes the whirling-disease-resistant rainbow fishery. This supports a mixed-fishery rainbow outing, not a claim that rainbows dominate. CPW: Fryingpan fishery survey (2019 data).
Browns were more abundant than rainbows in those samples. Historical rainbow stocking does not mean a recent release, and present species-specific catch odds are unknown.
- Access
- Use designated Frying Pan River SWA fishing-lease parking near mile marker 6 on Frying Pan River Road east of Basalt. Follow current CPW signs and remain within the posted leased fishing frontage. Visitors 16+ need the required license or SWA pass; fishing still requires a fishing license. CPW: current SWA access restrictions.
- Season
- No precise best-month ranking is established for this access. The CPW survey describes rainbow spawning in April–May; avoid spawning fish and redds. Check current releases, access and notices. Seasonal evidence.
- Rules
- Ruedi Dam to the Roaring Fork confluence: artificial flies and lures only; release all Rainbow Trout immediately. Current special regulations require release of all trout except browns. SWA access is fishing-only, within posted areas, and dogs are prohibited. Official rules.

South Platte River (Eleven Mile Canyon)

CPW identifies a successfully reproducing Rainbow Trout population in this specific canyon reach. That makes it a supported rainbow destination, not just another river with rainbows on its species list. CPW: Eleven Mile Canyon.
Browns and cutbows also live here. CPW does not establish rainbow dominance or your chance of catching one.
- Access
- Enter the canyon on CR 96 from Lake George. Use designated day-use parking at the spillway dam, not occupied campground spaces. Fish the public river below the dam, not the reservoir. USFS: spillway parking.
- Season
- Year-round fishery; the dirt canyon road can close in bad weather. A USFS day-use fee applies; check the current rate. Seasonal evidence.
- Rules
- From Elevenmile Dam to the Wagon Tongue Gulch Road bridge: artificial flies and lures only; release all fish immediately. These rules do not describe the entire South Platte. Official rules.

South Boulder Creek (Walker Ranch)

Boulder County’s 2017 Walker Ranch article describes a Brown and Rainbow Trout fishery with many fish in the 10–15-inch range and recommends spring through autumn fishing. Official fishery evidence.
Dated county guidance, not measured catch odds or Rainbow dominance. Winter release reductions can make fishing difficult.
- Access
- Use the Walker Ranch Loop Trailhead parking and the official trail map to reach South Boulder Creek. Allow for a hike down and back up. County open-space rules prohibit wading; plan bank fishing only. Boulder County: trailheads and map.
- Season
- Day use only. Confirm weather, trail conditions and park notices; the county does not publish a monthly rainbow-targeting window. Seasonal evidence.
- Rules
