  • Outside spawning condition, the body is silvery with a blue-green back.
  • There is no distinct Rainbow-like spotting pattern on the tail and dorsal fin.
  • During spawning, the body turns red and the head darkens toward green; males can develop a pronounced hump and hooked jaw.

East River (Roaring Judy public reach)

CPW identifies Roaring Judy as Colorado's largest kokanee run and places returning adults in September and October. This is a seasonal river opportunity, not a year-round kokanee recommendation. CPW: Roaring Judy.

Run strength and arrival timing vary. Hatchery operations and closed sections take precedence; hatchery raceways, ponds and spawning concentrations are not fishing recommendations.

Access
Enter the signed Roaring Judy hatchery access off Highway 135 and use designated parking near the bridge. Confirm the open public river boundary with staff or current signs. This outing excludes the hatchery outlet-to-downstream-property-boundary section, ponds and raceways. CPW: hatchery access.
Season
September–October is the supported river-run window. Contact the hatchery before leaving; do not infer open fishing from fish being visible. Seasonal evidence.
Rules
From the upstream hatchery property boundary to the Taylor confluence: artificial flies and lures only; taking kokanee is prohibited. The outlet-to-downstream-property-boundary section is closed August 15–October 31. Respect additional operational closures. Do not snag fish or target spawning beds. Official rules.

Gunnison River (Van Tuyl public reach)

CPW identifies a popular kokanee migration from early August into early November in the upper Gunnison. The recommendation excludes spawning beds and does not authorize harvest during the closed taking season. Official fishery evidence.

Access
Begin at Char-Mar Park using legal public parking, then follow the approximately half-mile trail to the Van Tuyl Y-gate. CPW requires foot access from the posted Y-gate trail intersection. Stay inside the signed 1.5-mile public reach. Public access reference.
Season
The documented run starts early August and extends into early November. This month-level planner conservatively recommends August–October only; a possible early-November outing needs local confirmation, not a month-long recommendation. Seasonal evidence.
Rules
Almont to Highway 50: artificial flies and lures only, release rainbows, and check current Brown Trout limits. Taking kokanee is prohibited August 1–October 31. SWA access is foot-only from the Y-gate; dogs must be leashed. Official rules.

Roaring Judy's official run evidence supports September–October, but the outlet-to-downstream-property-boundary section has a seasonal no-fishing closure. The full access and rules below stay visible; fish being present never establishes permission to fish.
