What's swimming in the Fryingpan River
CPW withdrew its Fryingpan fishery survey from its public portal in October 2026. The species notes below come from a 2024 CPW management notice, current CPW regulations, Trout Unlimited and local reporting.
- Brown Trout are the core fishery: CPW's ongoing surveys have documented an excessive abundance of Brown Trout, dense enough to stunt their growth and to suppress Rainbow Trout and native sculpin. That is a 2024 finding, not a live catch forecast (CPW 2024 management notice).
- The 14 miles from Ruedi Dam to the Roaring Fork are Gold Medal water, and the Gold Medal water continues another 22 miles down the Roaring Fork to Glenwood Springs (Colorado Trout Unlimited, Gold Medal Waters).
- The tailwater just below Ruedi Dam is the reach most renowned for large trout. The dam releases from the bottom of the reservoir, flushing thousands of mysis shrimp a day to the trout below (Colorado Trout Unlimited; Post Independent, 2012).
- The 2026-effective special regulation requires release of all trout except Brown Trout. Consult current CPW harvest rules before retaining any fish; the older two-fish/14-inch brown limit some guides still quote is not current (CPW 2026-effective regulations).

How we pick these
Species are CPW's records from its Fishing Atlas. A creek missing from this list may still hold fish; CPW simply has no record for it. The list runs in the order each one joins the Fryingpan River, from the headwaters down, and "joins" names the nearest town to where it does on the same side of the mountains: a Census place, or a town with its own post office. Flow is how USGS maps each channel, not a live reading.
Special rules are the ones CPW writes for each creek in its Fishing Atlas. Rules CPW writes for the river itself, such as closures around a creek's mouth, are not repeated on the creek, and no directions lead into water CPW closes all year.
A national forest stretch is one that both the Forest Service's and BLM's ownership maps show as national forest for at least half a mile of the creek, with a road on the Forest Service's motor vehicle map within 500 feet; directions go to that road. Maps can be wrong and road seasons change. Away from CPW access points, check land ownership before you fish.
Getting to the Fryingpan River
- About 8.5 of the 14 miles from Ruedi Dam to Basalt are open to anglers, on National Forest, state and CPW-leased land. The access is not always obvious: some is signed by CPW and some private water is posted no trespassing (ColoradoFishing.net).
- Ruedi Reservoir campgrounds (Dearhamer, Little Mattie, Little Maud, Molli B, Ruedi Marina) are managed by White River National Forest; Ruedi Marina has a boat ramp (USFS Ruedi Reservoir).
- Frying Pan River SWA (Fishing Lease) (CPW, Eagle County): public access prohibited except while fishing, dogs prohibited (CPW Frying Pan River SWA).
- Gold MedalRuedi Dam to the Roaring Fork confluence (~14 miles): artificial flies and lures only; all trout except Brown Trout must be released immediately. Check current CPW harvest limits before retaining any brown. The 2026-effective special rule no longer contains the older two-fish/14-inch limit (CPW 2026-effective regulations). Clean gear between waters.
